About this place
Tibetan Villa Samalbong is a family-run homestay of wooden cottages and duplex villas in Samalbong, a small village in the Sinji area of the Kalimpong hills in North Bengal. Every meal is included in the per-person rate, and on a clear day the view runs from the Kanchenjunga range down to the Teesta valley.
Samalbong has stayed quiet largely because so few people have built here yet. There is no market street and almost no traffic, only terraced slopes, patches of forest and a handful of village homes. Most of our guests come to do very little, and do it well: tea on the veranda while the mountains clear, a slow walk through the village after lunch, a bonfire once the sun drops. If you want a homestay in Samalbong where the hills, not a sightseeing checklist, set the pace of the day, this is it.
The rooms
There are seven rooms in two styles, all in the wooden, Tibetan-inspired build that gives the villa its name.
- Swiss Cottage: four cottages at ₹1,600 per person per night, all meals included.
- Duplex Villa: three two-level villas at ₹1,800 per person per night, all meals included. The split levels suit families or friends who like a little room of their own.
Between them the rooms sleep up to 31 guests, so the villa works as well for a couple on a quiet weekend as for a large family or a group taking over the whole place. Because the rate is per head and covers food, the bill at the end holds no surprises.
Food
The kitchen cooks in the Bengali home style, which many travellers from Kolkata are glad of after a long road up. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in both vegetarian and non-vegetarian versions; evening tea and snacks are vegetarian. Everything is part of your rate. Tell us about any dietary needs when you book so the kitchen can plan ahead, and ask early if you would like a barbecue by the bonfire on a cold night.
What's around
You don't need a car for the best of Samalbong.
- Necklace Viewpoint: 300 m from the gate, about a five-minute walk. Go after dark, when the lights of the town below come on across the hills.
- Khani Khola Waterfall: about 5 km away, roughly ten minutes by car.
- Village walks and bird watching: start straight from the property. The forest is close and the mornings are busy with birdsong.
- Mangal Dham: a Hindu temple with a landscaped garden, easy to fold into a drive towards Kalimpong.
For a fuller day, Kalimpong town and its usual sights, including Deolo and Durpin Monastery, make a single car trip and are back in time for dinner.
How to reach Tibetan Villa Samalbong
The plains end at Siliguri, and from there it is a climb into the Kalimpong hills.
- New Jalpaiguri (NJP) station: about 62 km, around three hours by car.
- Siliguri bus stand: about 59 km, around two and a half hours.
- Bagdogra Airport: about 80 km.
A private car from NJP or Bagdogra is the most comfortable way up. Shared jeeps towards Sinji are an option on a budget. Ask us about a pickup when you book and we will tell you what is possible on your dates.
Best time to visit
October to March gives the clearest skies and the best chance of a full Kanchenjunga view, and it is when Samalbong is at its crispest. Nights in December and January are properly cold, so bring warm layers; the bonfire earns its keep. The rest of the year the peaks hide more often behind cloud, but the hills are green and the village is at its quietest.

Come for two nights at least. The first evening goes in settling in; the second morning, when the clouds lift off the range, is the one people remember.
